Elderberries, also known as Sambucus Nigra, or Sambucus Canadensis, is a species of elderberry native to a large area of North America east of the Rocky Mountains, and south to Bolivia. It grows in a variety of conditions including both wet and dry soils, primarily in sunny locations. Inedible parts of the plant, such as the leaves, stems, roots, seeds and unripe fruits, can be toxic at lethal doses due to the presence of cyanogenic glycosides and alkaloids. Traditional methods of consuming elderberry includes jams, jellies, and syrups, all of which cook down the fruit and strain out the seeds (Sourced from Wikipedia). EXERCISE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN WORKING WITH THIS HERB. Traditionally, Indigenous people used it to treat fever and rheumatism, while the ancient Egyptians used it to improve their complexions and to heal burns. It is still gathered and used in folk medicine across many parts of North America and Europe. Today, Elderberry is most often taken as a supplement to treat cold and flu symptoms. From Elderberry syrup to supplements, this plant has a reputation for fighting colds and flu, among other possible health benefits. Because of its place as an Ogham tree and potent magic, Elder has long been recognized as an important plant ally and has an incredibly rich tie to magic and folklore. It is distinguished by five lines, and is tied to the Ogham letter “R” or “Ruis”. The Elder, as an Ogham tree, has strong connections to the fairy realm (as both a gateway, as well as the tree representing the Queen of the Fae, in some folklore). In Ogham, the general divination meaning of Elder is tied to Venus, and to the element of water. Elderberries are an herb of protection, and you can use pieces of it inside the house to protect the house from thieves, shield one from prying eyes, and provide physical and spiritual protection.
